Crimes against journalists should not go unpunished, stresses Bilawal

On the international day to end impunity for crimes against journalists on Thursday, Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari insists that crimes against journalist community should not go unpunished in Pakistan.

In his special message for the day, Bilawal has called for special initiatives to end impunity for crimes against journalists in the country.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed November 2 as the day to end impunity for crimes against journalists. The date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on November 2, 2013.

Bilawal said his party always works for creating an environment where journalists feel a complete sense of security.

“PPP leadership has been the target of a (sic) multi-million dollars [scams] and worst media trial in the history by opponents. But we always stood by freedom of media because of the foresightedness of our democratic founders,” he said.

According to the chairman PPP, his party has always condemned every act of intimidation, torture, victimisation and murders of journalists all over the world, including Pakistan.

Bilawal also pledged that PPP would continue its struggle for providing full protection to the journalist community and punishment to the perpetrators of the crimes against it.

Pakistan was ranked the fourth most dangerous country in the world last year for journalists, with a total of 115 killings since 1990.

According to the report issued by the International Federation of Journalists, at least 2,297 journalists and media workers were killed during the last 25 years, with Iraq ranking as the most deadly country.

The top countries accounted for the highest numbers of killings included Iraq (309), the Philippines (146), Mexico (120), Pakistan (115), Russian Federation (109), Algeria (106), India (95), Somalia (75), Syria (67) and Brazil (62).
