More than 20,000 displaced in 24 hours: the war ravages southern Syria

Although they are no longer covered, the war in Syria continues. And its consequences too. The evacuation of combatants and civilians from the Syrian province of Al Quneitra (south) continued on Sunday (22.07.2018) following an agreement reached with government forces and Russia, which are continuing their offensive in the neighboring Deraa region, from where they have fled 20,000 civilians due to intense bombings.

Some 2,500 people, including rebels, their families and other civilians, have left Al Quneitra in the direction of the province of Idleb, in the north of the country and the last opposition fiefdom in Syria, being the second wave of evacuees from this area under a agreement with the authorities of Damascus and its ally, Moscow.

The evacuation takes place thanks to a “reconciliation agreement” between the insurgents and Damascus, sponsored by Russia and which provides for the handing over of heavy and medium weapons of the opponents, the entry of the Russian military police to the localities of Al Quneitra, regularize the situation of men who did not perform military service and the return of the displaced. However, in the pacts that the Russian negotiators are sealing with the rebels of southern Syria, which will allow the Government to reestablish its authority in this region, are not included the combatants of the Army Khaled bin Walid, linked to the terrorist group Islamic State (EI ).

Massive displacements of civilians

According to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, more than 20,000 civilians have fled in the last 24 hours from the areas controlled by that group located in the basin of the Yarmuk River, in the west of the province of Deraa, which are being targeted by intense bombing on the part of Syrian and Russian aviation.

The Syrian army and its allies are intensifying their offensive against those places with the aim of completely controlling the border region with Jordan, after having forced the surrender of the other rebel factions in the past weeks. The Observatory has warned that some 10,000 civilians are trapped in the villages and towns of the Yarmuk River basin, in the middle of the government offensive, which has caused dozens of deaths and thousands of displaced people in Deraa since last June 19.

The SANA agency noted that the Syrian army has managed to regain control of 90 percent of Deraa’s surface thanks to the “reconciliation” pacts or arrangements with the armed opposition groups.

Exceptional gestures of Jordan and Israel

On the other hand, Jordan, which has so far kept its border closed to the Syrians fleeing the fighting in Deraa, has agreed to host hundreds of “white helmets”, members of the Syrian Civil Defense who develop rescue work in areas outside of regime control.

The Jordanian government announced on Saturday night that it would allow the entry of 800 Syrians, who will be relocated in the next three months in Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada, but finally has only received a group of 422, according to the latest On this Sunday, the spokesman of the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Mohamed al Kayed. Emergency workers were evacuated through the territory of Israel, which allowed their transfer as “an exceptional humanitarian gesture” due to “the immediate threat to their lives,” the country’s military said in a statement.

Both Jordan and Israel have been pressured by the thousands of displaced Syrians who have camped across their borders due to the violence in Deraa and Al Quneitra, and both have offered humanitarian aid to civilians but have not been allowed to move to your territories.
