Three officers who resisted appointment of new PIA CEO fired

KARACHI: Three officers, who resisted issuing a letter of employment to the incumbent CEO and pointed out contradictions in the dates of birth in his documents, have been fired, sources privy to the matter told The Express Tribune.

Earlier, reports emerged regarding fake matric certificate and contradictory date of birth in documents submitted by the Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Dr Musharraf Rasool Siyan. The CEO was appointed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

According to the documents obtained by The Express Tribune, CNIC of the incumbent CEO showed November 4, 1967, as his date of birth but certificates issued by the Rawalpindi Board of Secondary and Intermediate Education read March 12, 1967, as the date of birth.

Dr Siyan served as the staff officer under former governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and former minister for aviation Sardar Mehtab Abbasi.

Sources confirmed that Nawaz Sharif had approved Dr Siyan’s appointment as the CEO on the request of Sardar Mehtab Abbasi. Former managing director of PIA Capt Aijaz Haroon and Capt Junaid Younus were also among candidates who were interviewed for the post.

At least 25 years of experience in the aviation industry is a prerequisite for the post of CEO of the national carrier, however, the current CEO has no experience of working in the aviation industry at all.

According to sources, after his appointment as the CEO of PIA, officers in the airline’s human resource department had identified contradictions in dates of birth, barring issuance of employment letters and sought an order in writing from the then PIA chairman Irfan Ilahi in this regard.

The PIA chairman and secretary aviation called up the HR manager from Islamabad, issued the employment letter and subsequently terminated services of the HR manager along with two other officers, instead of transferring unrelated officers to the human resource department of PIA.

According to the sources, when contradictions in dates of birth in the documents of the CEO PIA was highlighted, Dr Siyan submitted an affidavit stating that the date of birth on his CNIC should be considered legal after which the notification to appoint Dr Siyan as CEO PIA was issued by the aviation division.

PIA has already fired 383 of its employees on charges of submitting fake documents.

Sources said that Dr Siyan had no experience in the aviation industry, besides holding a Masters degree in economics from London. He remained associated with the DMG group as well.

Secretary Aviation Irfan Ilahi, who is also the chairperson of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), following orders from high-ups favoured the appointment of CEO Dr Siyan but senior pilots and two former CEOs of PIA expressed reservations over the appointment.
