In France, compulsory education begins at 3 years. But is early learning really good for children? Do they learn fast? This is absurd, says psychologist Brigitte Rollet.
The future of France depends on the education system, says French President Macron. As a result, starting in September preschool will be mandatory, children will have to attend school after three years. 97% of children already attend preschool, however, Macron believes that the remaining 3% are children from low-income families, therefore initial education will be mandatory and meals will be free.
Perhaps, initial education favors France, but is it really good for children? How much learning and structure can a 3-year-old child handle?
Do children learn faster than adults?
No, that’s absurd. Even, they learn much more slowly. Their brains are developing and are not organized like the brains of adults. Especially, 3-year-olds have not developed important connections in different areas of the brain. For example, the distinction between left and right is a process that takes time and has to be developed.
Does this also apply to language learning?
Yes, in the brain there are two centers in which one establishes links over time. The only thing that children learn faster is the correct pronunciation. When a child is learning a language, they are heard as native, and for adults that is very difficult.
So what adults no longer learn is a rumor?
Yes, that is out of fashion. Have you ever heard about the study of taxi drivers in London? English neurologists have observed how taxi drivers’ brains change during the first four years of practicing this profession. This was in 2011, navigation systems (GPS) were not common. It was discovered that the orientation area of the brain, after four years, was much larger than that of the rest of the population.
The important thing is a correct training?
The capacity is there, it’s a question of how we take advantage of it. The daily training with the navigation system in the streets of London produced changes in the structure of the taxi drivers’ brain. This finding was revolutionary for the study of brain development. The study proves that adults can learn.
Do not parents have to worry about their children being disadvantaged if they go to school at age 7?
Even, I would say that it can be an advantage. Starting from a very young age with the structure of learning and making them work could cause demotivation in children and can overwhelm them.
In general, going to the garden makes sense?
It is extremely useful, because children in the garden learn to socialize and cooperate. And, do not get me wrong, it’s even an introduction to reading, writing and math. The important thing is that it is child friendly and fits your needs. There are children who can add and subtract with 3 years of age, while others have to learn to discern between much and little. Each child must be trained according to their own level.
