IK’s 11 points vs Quaid’s 14 points: Do we really need a Naya Pakistan?

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Sunday welcomed and thanked the crowd who flocked to the iconic Minar-e-Pakistan to attend the party’s power show in Lahore.

Unveiling an 11-point agenda for a new Pakistan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan called for establishing Pakistan in the image of the model state of Madina. Khan asserted that today’s Pakistan did not match the dream of Allama Iqbal or the Quaid-i-Azam’s vision.

The Quaid, he said, had dreamt of a country where all citizens, including all minorities, had equal rights. According to Imran Khan, the Quaid wanted to establish Pakistan based on the model state of Madina, which was the first social welfare state in the world.

However, referring to Quaid’s dream and his intentions to make Pakistan a prosperous nation, Khan presented a set of 11 points of success which shall be followed in order to achieve that dream. The 11 point agenda of Imran Khan touches lines from Education to corruption to women empowerment.

Imran Khan’s 11-point agenda:

Laying out the 11-point agenda which, according to him, will help bring “one system of justice, reduce poverty and elevate the living standards of the poor”, Imran started with education.

  • 1. Education

“First point: No country can ever flourish without emphasising on the education. All the Asian Tigers educated their children, the men and the women,” said the PTI chief. pti-collage-1525032992

“3.5 crore children study in government schools. Half of Punjab’s budget is being spent on Lahore [alone]. I ask Shehbaz Sharif who’s ruling Punjab for 10 years, how many international-level universities did he establish?”

“Countries don’t flourish because of the roads and bridges, but when you spend on human development,” Imran lashed out at the present government, adding that the PTI will “invest maximum on the development of the people, on one education system in Pakistan.”

  • 2. Health

The second point is about reforming the health system, he said. “When I can make SKMCH without government, I will build hospitals in Pakistan where the poor wouldn’t have to worry about money and the rich wouldn’t need to go abroad for treatment.”

Imran vowed to introduce a health insurance system modelled on the ‘Sehat Sahulat’ card in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the poor across Pakistan.

  • 3. Revenue generation

Next up is how to generate revenue in order to rid the country of heavy debts, he said.

“We don’t have money to run the country, we are in heavy debt. I claim in front of you today that I will show you how to gather money from this nation,” said Imran as he resolved to revolutionise tax collection system in the country.

  • 4. Corruption

Citing the example of his decision to expel 20 MPAs from his party for “selling votes” in the Senate elections earlier this year, Imran promised the people he will eliminate corruption from the country.

“We will stop money laundering, we will strengthen the NAB and FBR.”

The PTI chairman said he promises to never let anyone steal the public finances while urging the nation to support him in his “war against the corrupt leadership” of the country.

The party, which holds the provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is holding its gathering at the Minar-i-Pakistan, the most symbolic monument in Lahore, with “Dou Nahi, Aik Pakistan” being the main theme of the event.

  • 5. Investment

Imran termed the overseas Pakistanis as the biggest investing potentials for the country and resolved to bring investments into Pakistan.

“We will reduce the tax on electricity and gas for our industries so that they could compete with Indian market,” he said.

  • 6. Employment

Promising the youth much better employment opportunities, Imran said he would especially focus on boosting the tourism industry of Pakistan.

  • 7. Agriculture

Imran said he would improve agriculture and the lives of farmers on ‘an emergency basis.’

“They work for the whole year and get nothing in the end. They are being exploited by the sugar mill mafia.”

  • 8. Federation

The PTI chief resolved to strengthen the federation. “We know how the injustice is being done to smaller provinces. I know more about Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” he said.

  • 9. Environment

Imran said the environment was a priority on the party’s manifesto.

“For the first time ever, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government paid special attention to the environment,” he said, adding that the party plans to plant 10 billion trees across Pakistan.

“We can even clean the rivers,” he added.

  • 10. Police System

He stressed the importance of justice and the police system.

“Our Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police is totally depoliticized. There’s no victimization via FIRs, there not a single extrajudicial killing in the province while in Sindh Rao Anwar killed 400 people.”

  • 11. Women Empowerment

Imran Khan said that his party has an extensive program for women empowerment.

“Whatever I am today, it’s all because of my mother who made me a patriotic person and raised me to be a truthful person.”

So what is missing from this Agenda?

Rights of Minorities

The 14 points of Quaid focused on pertaining rights of Muslims in India, he focused on ensuring that minorities get equal rights. However IK, forgot to mention anything related to minorities in Pakistan. Whether it is Hindus, Christians, transgenders or any other part of our society. With the growing rate of murder cases of transgenders in KPK, Imran Khan should have addressed this issue as this is an integral part of Pakistan.

Protection of Children

Imran Khan forgot to mention any details or intentions on how he intends to ensure protection of our children from the rise of child molestation cases happening throughout our country. These issues are of major concern for a citizen like me, and I want to see our future leaders addressing this issue in detail and share their plans to end this inhumane activity. He should have discussed what his intentions are in terms of punishment for rapists and child molesters. KPK has the highest rate of child prostitution (A.K.A bacha bazi) and his 11 points agenda should have addressed this concern.

Clean Water and Electricity

Being from Karachi, these two points are the extremely near and dear to my heart. We around 10 hours of load shedding everyday, and weeks of unclean water supply, I really want to know how our expected future leaders are planning to address this issue. However, yet again, Imran Khan forgot to mention or put priority on these points in his 11 points agenda.

Inflation

An extremely important point considering the recent budget renewal and IK said nothing about it. Core consumer prices in Pakistan increased 5.80 percent in March of 2018 over the same month in the previous year.

Do we need this 11 points Agenda?

The question here is, aren’t these points pretty much the soul of every political campaign by every political party throughout the world? IK’s in his agenda has pointed out the obvious and there is no breakthrough aspect of these points. Some of his claims, like assuring inheritance rights to women (Which are already covered under Islamic Laws) were a far cry for attention and bit of an overstatement.

We do understand that it is important for any political party to have an agenda and to work on it, however IK’s agendas are very vague and only pin-point the exteriors of our nation’s problems. My vote for me and for my country is very precious and I want to ensure that it goes to the party who at least has a proper plan to combat national dilemmas that we face on daily basis.
