Pakistan continues to sizzle as extremely sweltering and dry weather prevails across the country during the month of Ramazan.
According to Pakistan Meteorological (Met) Department, mainly hot and dry weather is expected across most parts of the country such as Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana along with DI Khan, Sibbi, and Makran divisions.
The hottest temperature on Tuesday was recorded in Mohenjo Daro at 50°C, followed by Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana, Dadu, Jaccobabad, Lasbella, Sibbi, Bahawalnagar where temperatures surged to 49°C.
Earlier, Director General Met Ghulam Rasool had said that temperature is likely to remain higher than normal during the months of May and June.
The DG MET said the country is likely to receive less rainfall in April and May. “The demand for water would increase due to hot weather, however, the beginning of monsoon in the last week of June would decrease drought-like conditions.”
He went on to say that Mangla and Tarbela dams currently have a dead water-level, adding, “The dams would receive water upon melting of ice and glaciers in April and May respectively.”
Temperatures are expected to hike by two degrees in Karachi today as another wave of heatwave continues to engulf the metropolis with the temperature expected to hover around 42-44°C,
In light of city’s current weather conditions, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has put all KMC run hospitals on standby during heatstroke emergencies during the dates of May 29 to May 31.
Earlier the PMD had said, the heatwave of moderate/severe intensity would last until Thursday, though the Met Office had predicted that sea breeze would remain cut-off and wind from northwest to north would dominate during this period.
The city faced an extended heatwave earlier this month when the mercury routinely touched 44°C for four to five days. The scorching weather forced the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi to postpone the examinations last week.
In the face of the latest heatwave, the board has now changed the timings of examinations from May 29 to June 13. Exams for Arts Group (Regular and Private) will now start at 8:30am.
Power shortage continued to plunge large areas of Karachi and Hyderabad into pitch darkness at both sehri and iftar timings today.
Multiple areas in the city were in the dark Tuesday night as residents protested against load shedding during Sehri hours and burnt tyres. The affected neighbourhoods included C-1 area, Gulshan –e Iqbal block 9 and 13 in Karachi.
Residents of Latifabad No 9, 11 and Old Wahdat Colony in Hyderabad also took to the streets to protest.
On the other hand, K-Electric, the metropolis’ sole supplier of electricity said, that the impression that there is unscheduled or extra load-shedding is wrong.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi claimed that there had been no load-shedding in 90% areas across the country from 6pm to 4am.
Addressing a news conference about energy projects in Islamabad, the prime minister claimed that the incumbent government had added 10,000 megawatts (MWs) of electricity to the national grid.
He said that 35% surplus electricity, amounting to 6,000MWs, had been produced in 2018, noting that the country has the capacity to produce 28,400MWs electricity.
