The Democratic Council of Syria (CSD), which acts as the political arm of the Democratic Syrian Forces (SDF), announced this Saturday (28.07.2018) that it has reached an agreement with the Government of Bashar al-Assad to sit down to negotiate the end of the civil war that has affected the country since March 2011 and prepare a road map that leads towards a “decentralized and democratic Syria”.
The communiqué, made public by the Kurds that lead the SDS, was not immediately confirmed by Damascus and refers to a meeting held on Thursday July 26 in the capital of the country, following an invitation from the Government. “This meeting led to the adoption of the decision to form committees at various levels to develop dialogue and negotiations and put an end to the violence and war that has devastated the people and society,” the statement said.
The relations between the Al Assad Executive and the Kurdish administration that controls the northeast of the country have been essential for the development of the war in Syrian territory. While they have avoided direct conflict between the Syrian Army and the Kurdish units and have focused on fighting radical militias as an Islamic State, both sides have built visions about the country’s future that are at odds with each other.
