Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian teenager who became a symbol of the protests after appearing in a video beating Israeli soldiers last year, left Sunday (29.07.2018) in prison after spending almost eight months locked up and announced that she will continue his fight against the “Israeli occupation”.

Speaking later to journalists in Nabi Saleh, Tamimi announced that he will continue his fight against the Israeli occupation. “My message is that the fight will continue, especially our fight to get equal rights,” said the teenager. Tamimi also criticized the so-called nationality law recently passed by the Israeli Parliament , which enshrines the Jewish character of the State of Israel. The young man described the law as “racist” and as a form of “apartheid”.

Tamimi thanked her mother, who was also detained for almost eight months with her. “His ability to stay strong helped me to continue, the jail was harsh and humiliating, but we were able to turn it into a classroom.”

Nearly 300 Palestinian minors in Israeli jails

“I hope that the campaigns that were organized by me will continue, for all the children who remain in prison,” said Tamimi, who announced his desire to study in the future law. According to the Israeli human rights organization Betselem, at the end of last May there were 291 Palestinian minors held in Israeli jails.

Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas said Tamimi was “a model of the Palestinian struggle for peace, independence and a state of his own,” according to Wafa, the official news agency, adding that the teenager is a “weapon”. vital “in peaceful resistance to Israeli control over the West Bank.

The young woman has become an icon of the Palestinian resistance against the military occupation of Israel, while many Israelis accuse her of being an agitator who seeks to provoke the soldiers while it is filmed. His case sparked a wave of international criticism against Israel and put back on the board the system of Israeli military courts to which young Palestinians in the West Bank are subjected.

In December of 2017 a video went viral in which he appeared kicking and beating a soldier in the entrance of his family home. Shortly after was arrested and in March accepted an agreement with the prosecution to spend eight months in prison, but left a bit earlier for bureaucratic issues.

“Taking minors to a military court is not the right way”

According to Tamami’s Israeli lawyer, Gaby Lasky, it is a common practice in the Jewish state because prisons are overcrowded. He further stated that it was “obvious that Ahed’s arrest and punishment has more to do with politics than with legal issues.”

For her, the trial against the young Palestinian woman “has made clear the foolishness of the (Israeli) occupation.” Taking minors before a military tribunal is not the right way to end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, “he said. He added that he hopes that “our government is brave enough to reach a peace agreement and free us all from the chains of occupation.”

On Saturday, Israeli police arrested two Italian artists and their Palestinian partner who were trying to paint a Tamimi mural on a part of the fence that separates the West Bank from Israel, a spokesman for the Israeli police confirmed on Sunday.
