ISLAMABAD: Amid differences between the opposition parties over consensus presidential candidate, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has called a key party meeting today to discuss cooperation sought by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rahman for a joint presidential nominee.
Maulana Fazl had met Zardari yesterday and sought to support him and withdraw their candidate for upcoming presidential elections in his favour. The PPP will meet at 5pm today to discuss Fazl’s request and take a final decision on a presidential candidate.
It is also reported that the JUI-F leader requested Zardari to withdraw PPP candidate Senator Aitzaz Ahsan from the contest.
He maintained that division within the opposition will only benefit PTI candidate Arif Alvi.
However, after the meeting, PPP leader Farhatullah Babar told media after the meeting that PPP has clearly refused the suggestion put forward by the JUI-F chief and will only vote for Aitzaz Ahsan, party’s own presidential candidate.
Three candidates including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Dr Arif Alvi, Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Aitzaz Ahsan and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman on Monday filed their nomination papers for the presidential polls.
The opposition led by Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) remained divided over PPP’s decision to nominate Ahsan for president causing split in the strength of the combined opposition.
PTI will win presidential elections with majority: Arif Alvi
With a divided opposition, which is otherwise formidable in numbers, the Presidential Election on September 4, will prove a cakewalk for the PTI candidate, Dr. Arif Alvi, as the opposition votes will be divided in two candidates, PPP’s Aitzaz Ahsan and JUI-F chief Fazlur Rahman.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s nominee for the office of president Dr. Arif Alvi has said that PTI will win the presidential election with majority and urged the opposition to withdraw the candidate in his favour.
