Generations, despite any day and age, have their set mind and rules which invariably are difficult to mend. We all think of kids to be like soft clay, and by the time they grow up, the society in which they stay largely constitutes their upbringing. The rest is determined by the norms that they all live by.
Generation gap refers to differences in actions, beliefs, interests, and opinions that exist between people of different age groups and generations. Generational gap means difference in thoughts, lifestyle, interest, opinions in short every aspect of life among people of different age group. The generation constitute of three phases i.e. childhood, youngster (middle life) and old age.
Unfortunately, as the day passes the so-called mainstream phenomenon of generation gap is increasing in Pakistan, and sadly it is not subjective anymore, it is actually affecting our family values, morals and the relationships.
Generation gap is the major reason today why parents and children are moving away from each other. As we all know, the environment has changed, so the life style and with that the mind of children also changes.
Today’s generation don’t like others interfering in any of their personal matters; they don’t like parents ordering them, and if they try and tell them what’s wrong for them, they misbehave with their parents.
The question is what the reason behind all this is.
One factor which influences generation gaps is the increasing rate of change in society. With quick changes in science and innovation, the presentation, which today’s adolescent is getting, is huge. Esteem frameworks have progressively worsened and the adolescent is absorbing another culture.
Another factor is the increased mobility of society. Previously, society was not mobile. Usually people live in the same country and area. Access to information was also limited. But with the passage of time progressive changes takes place.
It all started with the advancement in technology. Although, the emergence of tech and innovation has managed to create multiple opportunities and opened new ways for the current generation, but it has also emotionally and mentally detached them from their parents.
The integration of technology and internet at higher education is in use for more than a decade. Use of internet and modern technology is now being introduced from early years to secondary schools.
Also, private sector schools are taking a step forward and introducing e-learning environments at their campuses. Moreover, the public and private sector schools are also catering the middle and lower income groups, and are now being considerate towards the use of technology. In every educational institute, there are age, educational background, experiences and differences among the people. Not to mention these all are important but there’s one difference that is, I think, overlooked by teachers – the generational difference.
Generation gap is basically created by the people themselves. They don’t talk to their children and share their own points of views with the children. Parents are way too busy with their work commitments and jobs that they don’t have time for their family and their children. They realize it only when there has a huge distance between the kids and the parents.
Parents certainly stopped giving their children the “right” attention when they needed it, and eventually it led them to this. Attention doesn’t meant restricting their growth, but actually the spiritual, mental and emotional connection between parents and their children.
There was a time when the ultimate role models of children were their parents, relatives or neighbors. But everything’s just changed. The Millennial now found that missing parental love in friends, drugs or sex.
The nagging drawbacks of generation gap become clear when one observes activities of today’s children. I feel that today’s fast-paced living has deprived children of the real joys of childhood. Spending all their time indoors, children now remain hooked to the internet on hi-tech gadgets and barely ever see the light of the day.
People now no more bother to even meet or know their neighbors. According to the recent news, it has been found out that the teenagers in Islamabad have been engaging in drugs, do you really think increase use of drugs is the children’s fault but not their parents?
As to the different attitude of life, the people belonging to the old generation always wonder what has gone wrong with the new generation. They feel that during their time, young boys and girls were better behaved, more obedient and had greater respect for elders.
Young people, on the other hand, feel that they are capable enough to learn on their own rather than lean heavily on the older generation for any guidance.
It’s not that we never desired new things. Of course, interests changed with every passing day and we dreamt of remote control cars, club houses and ‘oh-so-amazing’ cartoon figures. But life had limits back then.
Little mischief seemed so exhilarating because we had so many restrictions. Little desires, when fulfilled, were a cause of endless joy. Quite unlike today’s children who are barely ever happy or satisfied.
A generation gap is considered a negative quality, indicating that the disparity between two people is due to their age context.
However, perhaps one advantage of a generation gap is that a younger person could learn from the wisdom and experience that an older person has acquired with age.
While we would hesitantly ask our parents to buy us a push-button pencil case with concealed compartments, children today desire iPads and expensive electronic gadgets like Xboxes and mobile phones. I sometimes feel that my times were old-fashioned. But despite that, I feel my generation was luckier. We enjoyed both tradition and progressiveness. While we played Sega games, we also held cricket matches on streets.
The generation gap between parents and their children really refers to poor communication or lack of thereof. It is worth noting that the generation gap doesn’t always apply to all families.
Most often it comes down to the parents and the children having different opinions and values, which by itself is not necessarily a problem. Parents should understand this thing that children need some space. They should keep an eye on children but should not impose on them any restrictions.
Generation gap results in conflicts, major and minor sometimes leading to arguments like situations. But, generation gap has certain peculiar determinants. This is owing to the fact that each generation has its own trends and its own ways to look at things and interpret them.
To avoid this problem parents and elders one should be up to date and also aware about modern technologies.
Communication is the best way to bridge the gap. Kids must comprehend their constraints. In the event that they go past that it will be troublesome for them. It is the obligation of the guardians that they make their children comprehend their impediment and characterize a limit for them. This is accomplished for the advantage of the kids with the goal that they realize what is correct and what isn’t right for them.
Moreover, if you feel that your kids are slighting you then tell that on the off chance that they need regard they have to offer it to other individuals as well. This is a lifetime lesson which they have to learn as it is not restricted to their home but rather likewise when they go out and work in any association.
