Trump proposes 25% tariffs on Chinese goods

The value of these rates amounts to 200,000 million dollars and affects mostly consumer goods.

The US president, Donald Trump, has proposed to impose tariffs of 25% on Chinese products worth 200,000 million dollars, mostly consumer goods, reported this Wednesday (01.08.2018) the Office of the Foreign Trade Representative (USTR, for its acronym in English).

The imposition of 25% levies on these products means more than doubling the 10% increase that the Trump Administration had announced in early July, after Peking responded to the first tariffs ordered by Washington.

The USTR will analyze this proposal of the president in the coming weeks and will open a period of public consultation at the end of August so that US companies can offer their opinion on these sanctions.

Although some US media have linked the proposed increase in charges with a sharp drop in the value of the Chinese currency, officials dismissed that idea. “We want them to listen to our recommendations, open their market and stop hurting American workers,” a senior government official said in a conference call.

The tariffs proposed on this occasion will be applied for the first time to a considerable number of consumer goods, including furniture, lamps, food and computers.

Beijing talks about blackmail

Before the Trumo proposal was made public, the Chinese government said on Wednesday that the blackmail and the pressure from the United States. try to exercise their exports “will not work”.

The talks between Washington and Beijing on trade issues have stalled in recent weeks, a period in which both nations have imposed tariffs reciprocally.

The first wave of US tariffs it included a punishment of 25% to Chinese imports worth 34 billion dollars, a measure to which Beijing responded in the same way. A few days later, the Trump government reintroduced charges on goods imported from China, prompting countermeasures from the Executive of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
