Macron and Rouhani criticize United States foreign policy

The French president and the Iranian leader questioned the foreign policy of President Donald Trump. It was during the opening session of the 73rd UN General Assembly. Washington expressed his irritation.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron and the Iranian leader, Hasan Rouhani, who accused E.U of wanting “ineffective international institutions”, they confronted the “patriotism” of President Donald Trump. It was during the opening session of debates in the 73rd General Assembly of the UN.

After 10 months diplomatically conflicting, both countries agreed to rebuild relations. Saudi Arabia withdrew its ambassador to Berlin last year for comments on the political crisis in Lebanon.

There Macron made a fiery speech, in which he clearly distanced himself from Trump’s unilateralism and urged the present States to “not sign more trade agreements with countries that do not respect the Paris agreement” on climate change.

The speech was interpreted in the US media as a rebuke to Trump’s policies and as a new attempt by the French president to occupy space in the global leadership usually held by the president of the United States.

The French leader distanced himself point by point from Trump and from those who “wield sovereignty as a way to attack others”, for their abandonment of the pact against climate change in Paris, their rejection of the pact for migration, their position to peace in the Middle East and also to deviate from the nuclear agreement with Iran.

The Iranian case

For his part, Rouhani accused Trump of making efforts so that “all international institutions are ineffective” and told the Assembly that there are leaders in the world with “xenophobic tendencies similar to the Nazi current.”

He also referred to the economic sanctions applied by the United States to his country, which he defined as a form of “economic terrorism”.

Rouhani responded in the UN General Assembly to the statements made on the same platform by Trump, who called on the world to isolate Iran and promised to impose more sanctions against the country, while defending its withdrawal from the nuclear agreement. with that country.

Reactions in the White House

Before this ‘pincer’ Macron- Rouhani, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, did not hesitate to respond and said that his Government is “deeply disappointed” by the channel that the European Union (EU) will create to facilitate the business with Tehran and thus avoid the sanctions imposed by Washington after its exit from the nuclear agreement.

“Unfortunately, last night, I was disturbed and deeply disappointed to hear that some of the parties to the agreement (nuclear with Iran) are creating a special payment system to bypass US sanctions,” Pompeo said at an event in New York.
