Shobika Kalra, girl with a muscle degenerative disorder, stands up for herself and others

Shobika Kalra

Dubai: Diagnosed with a muscle degenerative disorder at the age of 13, Shobika Kalra is standing up for herself and others like her refusing to be a victim to her circumstances.

A topper throughout school, Shobika was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, right before her 13th birthday which compelled her to leave school. Disheartened by the diagnosis, Shobika locked herself in a room for 2 years but then one day she decided that she cannot feel disheartened like this.

The 28-year-old who has helped build over 1,000 wheelchair ramps across Dubai says that this is just the start and she wants to make as many countries wheelchair friendly as possible.

She has launched her app, the Wings of Angels to take her initiative to other parts of the world as she believes that not just Dubai, countries like Pakistan and India need to make differently abled people as independent as possible.

“As part of this campaign, we’re launching an app Wings of Angelz, named after our social initiative, to build a database of places that urgently require ramps. So far, whatever we’ve done has been project-specific and based on one-off inputs. We are now taking the initiative to the next level.”

That is no empty talk, considering Kalra has come a long way. The Indian expat, who suffers from a rare degenerative muscular disorder called Friedreich Ataxia, said dealing with challenges has been a way of life for her.

Shobika Kalra 28 years old, was diagnosed with a muscle degenerative disorder at the age of 13 only to make her stand up for herself and others.

Shobika has built 1,000 wheelchair ramps around Dubai. Outside metro stations, pharmacy stores, hospitals, and Grand Hyatt walk in cinema with great support from the government.

“They were very generous. They got the ramp made within one week and I think, I got the momentum from there.”

Shobika never let the diagnosis govern her life.

“She travels alone in the metro, so once a guy said to her out of sympathy, “Is no one with you? Your mom dad someone?” and it was really funny when she replied, “Where are your parents?”

Shobika believes that not just Dubai, ramps need to be built in Pakistan and India as well.

Shobika is now launching her app “Wings of Angel” to connect with people worldwide.
