KARACHI: Government doctors continued their protest and boycott of out-patient departments (OPDs) at public hospitals across Sindh for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, adding to the miseries of patients visiting these hospitals for treatment.
The medical community boycotted the Outpatient Departments (OPDs) of the public sectors hospitals here Monday, as a protest against delay in acceptance of their demands.
The government doctors have boycotted OPDs at almost all public hospitals in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Badin, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Thatta, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Dadu, Jamshoro and other small cities of the province.
The office bearers of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Sindh chapter told the media that the boycott would continue on a regular basis until the Sindh Government honoured the assurances which were given to the doctors.
The province-wide strike of the Young Doctors Association (YDA) in Sindh is yet another indication of dysfunctional administrative structures at the sub-national tiers of governance. The doctors affiliated with the body have boycotted work at Out-Patient Departments at public hospitals across provinces. They are demanding a pay package similar to that offered to their counterparts in the Punjab and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa.
Their demands include salary and allowances at par with their counterparts in Punjab and promotion for hundreds of doctors to BPS-20 and thousands to BPS-19 and BPS-18 grades.
On the call of Young Doctors Association (YDA) Sindh, junior doctors have been on strike in the province for the last two days to have their demands accepted.
Yesterday, the protesters refused to end their strike following the failure of their talks with Sindh’s health secretary. A delegation of the protesting doctors led by Dr Mehboob Ali held negotiations with the provincial health secretary.
The meeting agreed upon fixing salaries of house officer and PG at Rs50,000 and 90,000 per month, respectively.
The delegation stressed upon the secretary for immediate issuance of a notification about the demands that have been accepted by the Sindh government, whereas the secretary refused from doing so.
According to the action committee, the Sindh government was given a week to solve problems of doctors but the authorities paid no attention. Doctors have said that if their demands are not fulfilled within a period of three days, they will also shut emergency departments and wards.
