Supreme Court expects headway in Asghar Khan case

Supreme Court Asghar Khan implementation case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday summoned an interim report from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the Asghar Khan case.

An apex court bench, headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, directed FIA to disclose who were operating bank accounts allegedly used to distribute money among politicians, identify which the essential record is missing, and place on record evidence about those who received money and details of those who refused to receive it.

The FIA is further required to apprise the court about which institutions or individuals were responsible for keeping the record of transactions which is said to be missing.

The bench was hearing the case pertaining to non-implementation of its October 19, 2012 judgment in the Asghar Khan case.

Justice Saeed also directed the Ministry of Defence to submit its report in the case afresh.

He said he thought details of the people who received money would now come to light. “We are not going to close the case,” he reiterated.

Salman Akram Raja said some people who admitted to having played a role in distribution of money should face action.

Towards the end, the bench said it would proceed with the case in phases while not losing the sight of its destination. The hearing was adjourned till April 22.

Earlier, the FIA had said it could not obtain evidence to initiate criminal proceedings against the accused politicians.
