LAHORE: An accountability court on Wednesday extended physical remand of a suspect arrested for his alleged involvement in making illegal telegraphic transfers (TTs) for the Sharif family.
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials produced Aftab Mehmood before the accountability judge on expiry of his previous remand and demanded an extension in his remand for further questioning.
The court handed the accused over to the bureau for 14 more days and directed it to produce him on the next hearing on May 22.
A NAB lawyer contended before the court that the bureau has gathered evidence about Mehmood’s involvement in laundering money on behalf of Hamza Shehbaz and Salman Shehbaz.
On a number of occasions, he said, the suspect transacted funds into the accounts of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif’s sons. He said Mehmood was arrested on the basis of evidence provided by another suspect, Shahid Shafiq, adding both the suspects are cousins.

According to NAB sources, Hamza Shehbaz, before his elevation as the member National Assembly, had been receiving Telegraphic Transfers (TT) regularly to his name. The NAB sources said telegraphic transfers ceased to take place in the Hamza’s account after he became the member of the Lower House of the Parliament.
It is learnt that transactions then started to transfer in the account of Salman Shehbaz subsequently. Sources informed that Salman kept getting heavy amount through frontmen from abroad. The main operators, as investigators call them front-men, including Mushtaq Cheeni sent money via UAE and UK channels.
The investigators found that Hamza Shehbaz received 23 TTs from abroad, and probe officers managed to obtain proofs of 18 of the TTs received by the PML-N leader.
The sources said Hamza got the first TT of $1,65,000 on June 26, 2001 into his private bank account. A man named Mehboob Ali was the sender.
