KARACHI: The Lyari General Hospital, which works under the Sindh Health Department and receives Covid-19 patients from one of Karachi’s most densely populated areas and a coronavirus hotspot, has not been provided its personnel with any virus testing kits and safety gear.
Consequently, staff at the hospital, including nurses, paramedics and physicians, have repeatedly raised concerns about the unavailability of protective gear in the wake of fears of coronavirus.
According to Dr Naveed Shaikh, the hospital’s medical superintendent, while a 98-bed isolation unit has been set up for Covid-19 patients at the hospital, no tests are being carried out at the hospital to detect the virus as no test kits have been provided.
However, Dr Shaikh said the hospital workers were provided with safety gear.
In the meantime, it has also reported that three x-ray machines, as many dialysis machines and a hospital mammography machine are out of service, while all outpatient departments, with the exception of gynaecology, paediatrics and intensive care units, are closed. In fact, patients with ailments other than Covid-19 are still not being admitted to hospital.
