Developing an efficient transport system within the region of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) would reduce transportation costs and improve the overall competitiveness of regional countries, Vice President Shaikh Sultan Rehman of the Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) said.
Speaking at a meeting of the ECO Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECO-CCI) specialized transport committee on Tuesday, he emphasized the need for Central Asian governments to work towards that aim.
Rehman emphasized that the freight train project Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) would be initiated by completing the rehabilitation and construction of missing links on existing railroad routes.
He urged member countries to implement the ECO Transit Transport Framework Agreement (TTFA), which would drastically reduce transportation cost and improve transport services through harmonisation and modernisation of transit transport.
“Implementation of the TTFA will facilitate movement of goods and passengers, ensure safety of cargo, eliminate unnecessary delays during transit traffic, end customs fraud and tax evasion, and harmonise the necessary administrative affairs in the region,” he said.
He has also called for the opening for passenger rail service of the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan-Afghanistan-Iran (KTAI) route. The corridor presently houses solely cargo trains for commercial purposes.
During the conference, Convener Baber Iqbal, a specialist group, highlighted the problems Pakistan faced in the aftermath of Covid-19, which impacted its border and air cargo trade.
He also talked about the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor which would ignite growth and development in the region by providing a transit route through Pakistan to Central Asian countries.
They believed that the operationalization of the TIR Convention, also known as the International Road Transport Convention, would help to reduce transportation costs and enhance competitiveness of the region.
