Australia’s Covid-19 epicenter, the state of Victoria said that 24 hours had passed without reporting any new cases of Covid-19, a milestone last reached four months ago, raising expectations that Melbourne’s stringent lockdown would be eased.
On Sunday, Victorian PM Daniel Andrews deferred the reopening of the city which is a home to 5 million people — amid an outbreak in Melbourne’s north, Reuters reported.
As per officials. 15,000 tested were conducted in the state and all of them had tested negative.
“This is one of the best outcomes we could hope to see,” said Jeroen Weimar, Commander of Testing and Community Engagement for Victoria.
Andrews is under tremendous pressure to lift the July-imposed lockdown on Melbourne. Businesses and the federal government argue it will delay Australia’s economic rebound.
