Bestial mindset

Heartless. Cold-blooded. Savage. Inhuman. These adjectives no longer hold any significance when it comes to describing the sexual predators that exist across the length and breadth of Pakistan. That rape cases in the land of the pure have become a dime a dozen has become a universal fact, and the act meriting utter denunciation continues without letup, leaving an indelible scar on the mental and physical wellbeing of the victims.

As though Pakistanis had become tired of hearing endless discussions and elegies on the sad fate of the women and young girls who underwent the traumatic experience of being raped over the last few months, they were in for another startling tale of brutality that transcended all bounds of humanity, something they had not hitherto heard of.

A woman and her four-year-old daughter were gang-raped by a man and his accomplices in Kashmore.

The men, who are reported to have been arrested, had met the woman at a hospital in Karachi, where she was duped into getting her a job of Rs. 40,000 in Kashmore. The men then took her to Kashmore where they held her along with her daughter, and gang-raped her at Malak’s house.

While the woman was later released, her daughter was not allowed to go, and the suspects told her to bring another woman they saw with her at the hospital in exchange for her daughter. Despite their threat of killing the daughter, the woman daringly reached out to the Kashmore police. A raid was carried out at Malak’s residence, where three men including Rafique Malak were found. Upon seeing the policemen, the three men tried to escape by jumping over a wall. Rafique Malak hurt himself and could not run, while the other two managed to flee.

The incident sparked outrage on social media and was also denounced by rights activists and politicians. It remained one of the top trends on Twitter in Pakistan and was being posted about with the hashtag ‘Kashmore tragedy’. PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also took strong notice of “the brutal incident”, which had “shocked him personally and the beasts involved in this gruesome crime have shamed humanity”.

Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari said the “horrific Kashmore rape case shows how despite laws a bestial mindset continues to ravage our society, violating our children.”

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail dubbed the incident “sickening”, saying he was pursuing the case “to ensure strictest punishment for the criminals” and the best medical treatment and post-trauma care for the child.

One wonders how long our women and girls will continue to suffer at the hands of such sick people. The more we lament the situation, the less. The state must get its act together.
