The situation in the Gaza Strip was relaxed this weekend after the Israeli aerial bombardments in response to the firing of rockets from the coastal territory.
The Government of Israel is willing, if necessary, to overthrow the radical Islamic movement Hamas, which rules in the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip, said today (12.08.2018) the Israeli Minister of Energy, Jyval Steinitz. “It’s definitely an option,” said the minister in Tel Aviv.
That scenario “is closer than ever” if Israel has no other choice, Steinitz said, adding that his government has no interest in starting another war with Hamas. Steinitz is a member of the security cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On the night of Thursday to Friday, the Palestinian militants announced the end of the fighting with Israel. A Hamas spokesman said however that weekly protests will continue on the fence surrounding the strip.
Until Thursday morning the Israeli army counted some 150 rockets, which were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. More than 30 rockets were intercepted, but the rest fell mostly in an unpopulated area, according to the Army. In response, the Israelis attacked 150 military targets in the Gaza Strip, including training camps, warehouses and a weapons factory.
Since the end of March, more than 160 Palestinians have died in protests and clashes, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. An Israeli soldier was killed. The Palestinians demand an end to the blockade of Gaza and the right to return to their land, that of their parents and grandparents. These are towns or cities form that are currently part of the territory of Israel. They claim hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee or were expelled with the creation in 1948 of the State of Israel, which rejects those demands.
