After 67 positive tests, Lyari emerges as a new coronavirus hotspot

KARACHI: The Sindh government as well as the province’s political leadership are trapped in another dilemma after finding Lyari and its surrounding areas as a new hotspot for the Covid-19 pandemic, where more than 60 people have been tested positive in just two days. The situation requires the authorities to take urgent and effective action for the highly populated area, officials and sources said on Sunday.

The situation also created a disturbance at the Chief Minister House where CM Syed Murad Ali Shah ordered the district administration, the area’s health officials and security high-ups to move fast for all necessary measures to prevent the neighborhood outbreak, where inaction and relaxation could lead to a “great disaster.”

The CM appointed senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader Waqar Mehdi, who is his inspection and inquiry special assistant, to look into the situation and formulate an immediate strategy to prevent the spread of the virus.

Speaking to Dawn, Mr Mehdi agreed with the CM’s concerns, but stressed that to keep things under control, the district administration and government machinery were fully activated.

“The situation is critical in the sense that in only two days we have registered 67 patients in the Lyari and Garden areas,” he told. “It’s not like that we had no case of Covid-19 in district South or Lyari neighbourhoods before, but the worrying thing is that the fresh cases have been reported from katchi abadis, which are so densely populated. Before the fresh 67 cases, we had coronavirus patients in Civil Lines and areas of Cantonment Board in district South. The fresh trend doesn’t sound good.”
