Center calls for ‘smart lockdown’

Although on Monday, the confirmed Covid-19 cases soared past 8,000 with the addition of 514 new ones and 20 deaths by 2 am, on Sunday, the federal government stated that the provinces enforce lockdown in only those localities from which new cases are reported.

The government also agreed to open the borders of Torkham and Chaman twice a week to facilitate the return from Afghanistan of around 800 stranded Pakistanis, as well as mulling over options to permit certain foreign airlines to carry back the stranded Pakistanis from various countries.

In another substantial development, six health sector stakeholders formed the Grand National Health Alliance (GNHA) to help protect health care providers who are at the frontline of the Covid-19 war. The alliance sent a letter to Pakistan’s chief justice, claiming that the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Dr. Zafar Mirza and Punjab Health Minister Dr. Yasmeen Rashid had misled the nation and the top court by issuing false statements about the country’s coronavirus situation.

Discussing the measures taken to stop the spread of the virus, Special Assistant to National Security Prime Minister Dr. Moeed Yusuf told a news conference that attempts were being made to stop the dissemination of the disease from abroad. He said, however, that 63 per cent of the cases were reported through local transmission. He added that the capacity for testing would be increased and the relevant authorities should opt for ‘smart lockdown’.

“We need to go for smart lockdown and let the other areas of the country remain open. Only those areas should be sealed from where cases are reported and other areas should remain open,” the PM’s aide said.

“We have opened some industries but they also need to ensure social distancing among their employees,” he added.
