Six months after ‘viral pneumonia’, Wuhan returning to normal, with masks

Six months after the World Health Organization heard of cases of “viral pneumonia” that would turn into the Covid-19 pandemic, life in Wuhan, the city where it originated, is back to normal, though masks remain omnipresent and emotional wounds persist.

Wuhan, a city of 11 million, was locked up for two months beginning at the end of January in a punitive move that helped wipe out the outbreak at its original epicenter. The province of Hubei and its capital city Wuhan accounted for the majority of the 83,531 new cases of coronavirus in China and 4,634 deaths.

Due to interventions such as extensive testing and contact-tracing, China has controlled the epidemic, even though it is grappling with a flare-up in Beijing this month.
