NCC to discuss new anti-Covid measure amid the surge

On Tuesday (today), the National Coordination Committee for Covid-19 will meet with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair to discuss additional measures to curb the country’s rising spread of coronavirus.

Minister of Planning Asad Umar said the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) proposal to combat the pandemic will be presented at the meeting.

Against the backdrop of the second outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the meeting was called. In Feb this year, the disease first appeared in the country and saw a peak in mid-June. By the end of August, the curve had flattened, but in October it again showed a rising pattern.

“The NCOC discussed additional measures to control the rising spread of Covid19. Recommendations will be tabled in the NCC being called for tomorrow,” Umar tweeted. He also stressed the need to take immediate measures to stem the disease spread, without affecting economic activities.

The country is in the grip of Covid’s second surge, with a positive pace above 4%, the strongest since August. The country reported 1,123 new cases on Sunday, also the highest single-day tally in over three months. At least 12 people had succumbed to the virus, The NCOC said on Monday.

In the past few days, the authorities have given several warnings against breaching the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of Covid-19. The NCOC released new guidelines last week on the closing of wedding halls and shopping malls and made it mandatory to wear face masks.

The government also imposed new regulations last month for travelers arriving from abroad to Pakistan, making it obligatory for passengers to get the Covid test before boarding a flight to any airport in Pakistan.

‘Meeters and greeters’

On Monday, additional passenger safety measures were taken by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to bar passengers from entering the airport. In a notification, the Authority confirmed that only travelers, accompanied by the driver of their vehicle, would be permitted to enter the airport.

“As per the instructions of government of Pakistan, in order to curb the spread of COVID-19; meeters and greeters are not allowed at the Airport. Only driver may pick-up the passenger from parking and drop the passenger on drop lane,” the CAA notification said.

“Drivers will stay in the vehicle during pick or drop. Kindly cooperate with the airport authorities in this regard. Your safety is our priority,” the notification added. CAA officials appealed to the people not to visit the airports unnecessarily.
