New York’s coronavirus death toll soared to 10,000 and the number of confirmed cases worldwide was close to 2 million, even as the lack of fresh hot spots created a ray of hope worldwide and sparked discussions about whether certain places might begin to reopen, AP reported.
The brunt of the virus was felt more intensely in New York, Italy, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom, but bleak projections of a virus that will spread more ferocity to other parts of America and the globe have not yet materialized after more than a month of measures intended to blunt its damage.
Officials around the world were worried that halting quarantine and social distancing initiatives could easily reverse the progress achieved by those steps in slowing the outbreak.
